This number is less than the numbers of teachers for other disciplines. The au- thor figured that there is a shortage of totally 300 000 physical education teachers in China, and 3/4 of them are in elementary schools. The reasons for the shortage of physical education teachers are the followings: the physical education discipline is not highly regarded; physical education teachers are not sufficiently staffed; there is a lack of physical education staffing system and the quality of physical education teacher cultivation is not high.
