Woman was a colonized sex double confined within the domain of household and society. Throughout the history, Australian women writers have been striving to write about their own experiences. Miles Franklin and Christian Stead are two major figures in the literary history of Australia. Though different on surface, Miles Franklinís My Brilliant Career and Christina Steadís For Love Alone both explore womenís experiences in different historical times with emphasis on the role social and cultural forces played in forging womenís selfhoods. The two protagonists, Sybylla and Teresa both went on female odysseys, through which they were in seek of their own independence and selfhoods. With the heroinesí experiences, the two female authors were in a way to reconstruct their own youthful experiences and their works to a great extent reflect the real social circumstances in which women struggled to survive. This paper does an analysis of the two female protagonistsí struggle to attain individuality and freedom in order to render prominence to the intricate connection between literature and social circumstances.
