外文翻译 Carbon Management in Tourism –A Smart Strategy in Response to Climate Change MaterialSource: Global tourism trends and issues Author: Wolfgang Strasdas The ITB 2009 was dominated by the global financial and economic crisis. Com- pared to the ITB 2008, when global warming was a major issue, one could almost get the impression that climate change and resource conservation were problems of the past and no longer of interest. Unfortunately, climate change is not going away. In reality, the opposite is the case. Recent studies indicate that things have gotten worse than predicted by most scientists. The Arctic is warming up faster than anticipated, with the Greenland ice shield being of particular concern. As a consequence of this, sea levels are also rising faster. While the financial crisis may soon be over, the impacts of climate change will stay with humanity for the centu- ries to come (Stock 2009). Thus, for tourism, climate change will remain a major challenge, with long- haul tourism and aviation, winter tourism and beach tourism in Southern latitudes being the most vulnerable segments of the industry. In addition, there is the pros- pect of rising oil prices once the present slump is over, of stricter emission regula- tions and a growing environmental awareness of tourists. In this context, carbon management is seen as a key strategy for tourism companies and organisations, not just to mitigate their own contribution to global warming, but also to adapt to the direct and indirect impacts of climate change in their own economic interest. This article is largely the result of a panel discussion organised by Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences in the framework of the ITB 2009 Convention. It summarizes the presentations and discussion results of the panel as well as some background information, but does not pretend to provide an in-depth analysis of car- bon management in tourism – a field that is still in an infant stage in t
