In American literary history, Ernest Hemingways The Old Man and the Sea has always been studied on its prominent heroism. There exist diversity views towards the protagonist Santiago who has always been praised by heroic spirit, grace under pressure. Another view holds that Santiago is totally a tragedy since he is trapped both physically and mentally. Thus, my term paper aims at exploring the connotation of Hemingway’s heroism from perspectives of characters and settings. Further more the paper intends to have its understanding of Hemingway’s hero as well as his philosophy of life through the novel. Enlightenment will be achieved to guide our thoughts. Key words: Hemingway; heroic spirit; grace under pressure; 《老人与海》中海明威英雄主义研究 摘要：英雄主义是引人关注的主题之一。在美国文学史上，海明威的《老人与海》被后人深入广泛研究。人们从多角度探讨小说中色彩鲜明的英雄主义。小说主人公的勇敢坚毅，重压下的优雅一直被人们赞扬，，但也有观点认为主人公是悲剧人物，因其身体和精神上都被束缚。因此，这篇学期论文旨在探讨海明威式英雄主义的真正含义，并将从人物、背景角度探讨分析这一主题。同时，论文通过小说将全面的了解海明威的人生哲学，激励我们以坚强的态度面对挫折困苦。 关键词：海明威；英雄主义；重压下的优雅 Introduction Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899 ~1961), American journalist and writer, is considered the most famous novelists of the 20th century. Hemingway was born in Chicago, Illinois, the USA. After graduating from high school, he worked as a reporter and started his writing career. He once took part in World War, Spanish civil war and World War II, which created the main source of inspiration for him in the future. As an American writer, “Hemingway was deeply rooted in this heroism” (Barker 112).
