Abstract Objective Theneuroprotecti0nprovidedbyrecombinanthumanerythropoietin(rhEPO)ontheretinafrom
ischemia—repeffusioninjuryhasbeenconfirmedbutitsmechanism isnotfullyunderstood．Thepresentstudyaimedtoinvestigate
theeffectofsystenficadministrationofrecombinanthumanerythropoietin(rhEPO)ontheexpressionofglutamateintheretina
afteracutehigh intraocularpressureinvitro． M ethods Theacutehigh intraocularpressuremodelswereestablishedbythe
peffusionofphysiologicalsalineintoanteriorchamberofthelateraleyeinforty—eightJapanesewhiterabbits．Other6 Japanese
whiterabbitswereasnormalcontrolgroup．Theexperimentalrabbitswerethen equallydividedintothemodelgroupand EPO
group，andhypodermicinjectionofrhEPOwasonlyperformedintheEPOgroup．Glutamateexpressionintheretinainbothgroups
wasobservedbyimmunohistochemistryondays1，3，7，and 14 afterretinalischemia—reperfusion．Glutamateexpressioninanother
6rabbitretinawithoutanytreatmentwasdeterminedasnormalbythesamemethod．TheuseofanimalfollowedtheStandardof
Association forResearch inVision andOphthahnology． Results Nopositiveexpression ofglutamatewasobserved innormal
rabbitretina，butpositiveexpressionresponseofglutamateoccurredintherabbitretinaofthemodelgroup．Thenumberofpositive
expressioncellsintheEPOgrouPwasmorethanthatinthemodelgroupateachtimepointfP 0．O1)．Onday14afterischemia-
reperfusion．thenumberofpositiveexpressioncellswas3．3±1．1perhighvis
