Abstract: Some typical leather chemicals, such as chrome-absorption auxiliaries, alternatives
to chrome, enzyme preparations, w ater-based binders, easy biodegradable degreasing a-
gents, fatliquors, retanning agents, w ere overview ed w ith respect to the ecological aspects in
leather manufacture. It w as suggested that more attention should be paid to the w hole lifecy-
cle of leather, from the use of raw hides, the manufacturing process, the quality and service-
ability control to the recycling and disposal of leather.
