Abstract Idle Sense is a famous MAC scheme that exhibits superior performance over IEEE 802.11 DCF in
saturated operation. However, the saturation operation rarely occurs in a realistic wireless LAN. Therefore,
the objective is to investigate the non-saturation performance of Idle Sense. It is revealed that the
non-saturation performance of Idle Sense is worse than that of IEEE 802.11 DCF, according to the design
principle of Idle Sense. Then an improvement to the original Idle Sense is proposed to overcome its draw-
back in non-saturation operation. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed improvement is validated via
NS2 simulations.
