THESISFORMADEGREEINZHEJIANGUNIVFRSITY AStudyoftheRolesofMetaphoricAwarenessin In-depthReadingComprehensioninEFLLearners ABSTRACT Researchesonmetaphorhaveexplodedinthepastdecades.Butlittleofthemare concernedwiththeapplicationofmetaphorinthefieldofappliedlinguistics. AccordingtoLakoffandJohnson(LakoffJohnson,1980;Lakoff,1987,Lakoff, 1993),metaphorispervasiveineverydaylanguageanditisafundamentalcognitive abilitythatallowsustotalkandthinkaboutabstractconceptsandphenomenon. Certainmetaphoricexpressionsaresodeeplyentrenchedinhumanthoughtand incorporatedintothelinguisticsystemthattheirmetaphoricnatureisoftenneglected. Theoryandpracticesuggestthattheabilitytoacquire,produce,andinterpret metaphorsinthetargetlanguageisimportantforlanguagelearning.Andmetaphoric competencefonnsanimportantpartofcommunicativelanguageability.With178 CET-4studentsofZhejiangUniversityassubjects,thestudyinthisthesisisintended tofindoutwhethermetaphoricawarenessfacilitatesin-depthcomprehensionin reading,andwhetherlearnersmetaphoricalawarenesscorrelateswiththeirgeneral languageproficiency.ResultsshowthatitisstatisticallysignificanttodirectL2 learnersattentiontotheliteralsenseofmetaphoricexpressions,andthereisweak relationship between metaphoricawarenessand learnersgenerallanguage proficiency.
