Abstract
With the progress of the reform of college English teaching, language instruction based
on modern information technology has become an irreversible trend of college English
teaching. Network-based college English teaching has aroused the interest of many
researchers. However, the previous studies are most devoted to the effectiveness of network-
based instruction, its advantages over traditional instruction, and the development of students’
comprehensive ability of language application. There are few studies focused on college
English teachers’ utilization of information technology in language instruction.
This study attempts to understand the current situation of college English teachers’
utilization of information technology in network-based language instruction from three
perspectives. 1) Why do teachers incorporate information technology into their instruction
practices? 2) How and in what specific curricular areas do teachers use various technical tools?
3) What difficulties do teachers encounter in integrating information technology into
instruction?
This is a qualitative and empirical study. An interview is designed as the research
instrument. H University, one of the model institutions of the national college English
teaching reform, is selected as the target school. Twelve teachers from the Foreign Languages
Teaching and Research Department are chosen for the interview through the combination of
stratified sampling and random sampling. The data from the interview are analyzed to
understand the college English teachers’ utilization of
