Abstract John I. Goodlad is an American educational theorist who has published influential models for renewing schools and teacher education which has made great contribution to American education. He is considered to be Dewey mantle heir in contemporary American. And he was hailed as “the multidimensional researcher in the field of education”. “Nongraded Elementary School” is as an essential as well as the most influential component of his educational theories. But the current domestic scholar for Nongraded Elementary School research has just started, mainly introductory research, and the system and in-depth research is rare. Using literature and analysis studies makes an intensive study of Nongraded Elementary School. This research has great theoretical and practical value in education reform of school. The research of Nongraded Elementary School education mainly focuses on the following questions: the historical and theoretical background of Nongraded Elementary School education, the idea and practice of Nongraded Elementary School education, the reflection in the practice and enlightenment of Nongraded Elementary School education. It came into been after World War II, at the time when the United States and Soviet Union were competing for hegemony, and developed under the impact of the American educational revolutions. Now it has received widespread concern from the educators all over the world. The Nongraded Elementary School absorbed the essence of Dewey progressive education thought, on the theoretical starting point of individual differences, class organization form based on homogeneous grouping concept, with focus on process of the education evaluation system. Goodlad’s theory of “Nongraded Elementary School” is an integration of his thoughts on curriculum
