Abstract: A practical met ho d fo r the calculatio n of unbalance factor caused by asymmetr ic lo ads in a three-
phase three-w ire distr ibution system was present ed. By int roducing the term of sequence capacity of an asym-
met ric load, the cur rent unbalance facto r is the rat io of negat ive- sequence capacit y to the positive- sequence ca-
pacity of t he lo ad, and the vo ltag e unbalance factor at the po int of co mmon coupling is t he rat io of neg ativ e- se-
quence capacity to the short- circuit capacity of the distributio n system . T he functional relatio n bet ween the se-
quence capacity and the phase- to- phase pow er of the load w as established to simplify the calculating pro cess of
unbalance facto r. Examples show that the pro po se method is simple and co nv enient, an
