The modern bamboo structure sheltersw ere designed w ith consideration of cost effect, earthquake resistance, inhabitab ility and environ mental friendsh ip. Testsw ere conducted and show ed satisfactory resu lts of the load carrying capacity of structural elements and air quality. Bamboo structure can be considered as a green construction, and the adoption ofmodern bamboo structures in d isaster relief and reconstruction can take the advantage of local resources and reduce the cos.t Under the support of donations from Hunan University, the authors manufactured and installed seventeen 48 2 2 m classrooms and three 16m offices at the Beijie Elementary School, Guangyuan C ity, Sichuan Province. The au thors also conceived design of permanent bamboo structures for reconstruction of the d isaster affected regions.
