A Cognitive Study of Listening Comprehension and its Application
in Language Teaching

Abstract: Based on cog nitive ling uist ic t heories, t his paper analyzes t he cognit ive mechanism of list en-
ing comprehension. t is believed that the informat ion-processing mode in the process of listening compre-
hension is t he int eraction of t op-dow n processing and bottom-up processing and backg round know ledge plays
a very import ant role in list ening comprehension. T his paper concludes w it h the applicat ion of cog nit ive t he-
ory in listening comprehension courses. Cognit ive linguist ics studies t he relat ionship betw een lang uage and
cog nit ion, w hich provides us wit h a better underst anding of listening comprehension process, t hus greatly
benefit ing listening comprehension courses.
