Machine elements - CLUTCHES and BRAKES
Clutches and brakes are machine elements, usually associated with rotation, that
have in common the function of storing and/or transferring rotating energy.
A simplified dynamic representation of a friction clutch or brake is shown in the figure.
Two inertias I and I , traveling at the respective angular velocities ω and ω (one of

which may be zero in the case of brakes), are to be brought to the same speed by
engaging the clutch or brake. The engagement is achieved by applying an actuation force .
During engagement slippage occurs because the two elements are running at different
speeds and energy is dissipated during actuation, resulting in a temperature rise.

Clutches and Brakes – Working principle
The circular crown is rotating at an angular velocity ω and is pressed against a flat rough surface
(μ is the coefficient of kinetic friction between the two surfaces A in contact) by a force N.

The pressure p distribution on the circular crown is assumed to be of circular symmetry,
depending on the distance from the axis, so that p=p(r).
