《Unit 1 Lifestyle》Culture CornerCulture Corner Ask students what they know about food and drinks in Britain. What are the people in the picture drinking and eating? Exercise 1 Students read the text and answer the questions. Answers 1. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the English ate only two main meals each day?Cbreakfast and a heavy supper that would last four several hours in the evenings. As a result, people often got hungry during the long wait between these two meals. To solve this problem, the Duchess came up with the clever idea of inviting some friends to join her for an afternoon meal between four and five o’clock. 2. In the 17th century, coffeehouses were busy and noisy places where people like merchants and bankers went to do their business as well as to drink coffee. Exercise 2 In groups, students discuss the Chinese tea culture. They then report the result to the class. Options Extension In groups, students try to think of some expressions in Chinese involving eating and drinking which people used to invite friends for a visit. They then tell the class these expressions. Bulletin Board Objectives ■ To discuss a problem. ■ To give suggestions and advice. ■ To write a letter. ■ To exchange ideas about different ways of coping with problems. ■ To further explore the theme of the unit. Options ■ Ask students what they do when they need help. Do they talk to their parents or do they ask their friends for advice? Why? ■ Students read the letter on the Bulletin Board and discuss the writer’s problem. ■ Students read the two replying letters. Do they think the suggestions provided are good? ■ Students choose the advice that they think is most helpful and write it in a letter. ■ Display the letters on the class bulletin board. Encourage students to read other students’ letters after class.
