Teaching immigrant students and cross?鄄cultural communication            【Abstract】When immigrant students first come to a new class in a new country, they will certainly feel nervous. A major concern of ESL teachers is the social and cultural adjustment of their students’ life in the new country. Clarke (1976) suggests that students who act withdraw; anxious, confused, or angry have problems related to culture shock. Teachers who see students struggling with those problems often ask “what can we do to help them?” This essay is about how we can solve these problems and to take advantage of cross-cultural communication to develop students’ critical thinking.   【Key words】Cross?鄄cultural communication; cultural shock; critical thinking and cultural fatigue.   【中图分类号】G64 【文献标识码】A 【文章编号】2095-3089(2014)07-0037-02   1.Introduction   English language learners are the fastest growing segment of the United States population. In fact, all the developed countries have many immigrant students. For example, more than half of the students under age 12 in the Amsterdam schools are from immigrant families (Crul amp; Holdaway, 2009). So, immigrant students are becoming more and more important part in today’s class. As teachers we should pay more attention to those students and help them quickly adapt to the new environment. Actually almost all the immigrant students will not fell easy adjusting to the new environment at the beginning; they encounter all kinds of problems maybe they can not handle them by themselves or even with the help of their parents. They feel isolated and may not likely to focus on learning. So it’s time for teachers to stand on their feet and help them go through all the difficulties. The aim of this paper is to tell teachers how to get to know the immigrant students in the class, help them solve the problems and establish good relations with other students especially with American students.
