The Lady Or The Tiger ？ Frank R. Stockton Long ago, there lived a powerful(强大的king. He had a strange way to decide whether an accused person was right or wrong. There was a public arena(公共竞技场which helped the king to make a decision. When a person was accused(被控告的, his future would be decided in the public arena. The accused person had to walk directly to these doors and open one of them. If the accused man opened one door, there came out a hungry and fierce(凶残的tiger. The tiger would tear him into pieces(撕成碎片as punishment(惩罚. But, if the accused man opened the other door, there came out a lady. He would marry the lady. The accused person could not know which door the lady was hiding. He opened the door and he was to be killed or married(结婚in the next minute. The king had a beautiful daughter and the king loved her very much because she was like him in many ways. The princess(公主n who was the best-looking and bravest in the country. But he was born in an ordinary(普通的family, not part of an important family. One day, the king discovered(发现the relationship(关系between his daughter and the young man. The king put the young man into prison(关进监狱 set a day for his trial(审判 in the public arena. So the king could know whether the man had done wrong or right in loving the princess. Of course, this was especially important. Never before had an ordinary person been brave enough to love the daughter of the king. The king knew that the young man would be punished, even if he opened the right door. From the day it was decided that her lover’s future should be decided in the arena, the princess had thought of nothing but this matter. In order to get the secret behind the doors, she had done what no other person had done. Because she had more power and influence(影响力than anyone else, at last, the princess knew behind which door stood the tiger, and behind which waited the lady. She also knew who the lady was. The lady was one of the loveliest in
