Busan, Korea 606791 Abstract: the flood disaster in Yangtze River is severe, especially in the middle-lower reach and Jinjiang. This paper investigates how to mitigate the flood disaster in the area, the study shows that the disaster could be greatly mitigated if giant reservoirs was built in the region. Although it is impossible to build the reservoirs in the area due to the relatively flat topography, the lakes like Dongting, Paoyang and Taihu can effectively perform as reservoirs if the invented method is introduced. By constructing a bypass canal surrounding the lakes, the live capacity of lakes could be kept until the flood peak, thus the lakes could be functioned as reservoir to regulate the floodwater artificially. The feasibility study shows that the transformation of each late only spends 10% of the cost of Three-Gorge-Dam Project, and the life span could be extended due to this transformation.
