Abstract Nitrophenols are among themost mi portant and versatile industrial organic compounds. Several
nitrophenols can be highly toxic and refractory and were listed on theU. S. EnvironmentalProtection gency!s
Priority PollutantsList . In natural environments, nitrophenols are noteasily biodegraded andmay stay indefi
nitely in the environment. This paper reviews the research advancesofbiodegradability of nitrophenols under arti
ficial conditions. The extensive efforts have beenm ade to discuss them icroorganism s able to transform nitrophe
nols, the research of anaerobic, aerobic and cometabolic biodegradation of nitrophenols. t them eantmi e the
shortages and trends of the research are analyzed.
