Abstract: China, w ith its huge o ulation and relativemeager natural resources, fragile ecosystem s, lus the un recedented urbanization and econom ic grow th in term s of s eed and scale, is facing sever challenges of sustainab ility and surv iva.l Addressing these challenges requ ires that the national land should be lanned and used w isely. This research is a ilot roject ami ing at establishing ecological security atterns at the national scale that w ill rotect themost sensitive ecological landsca es and critical attern as a strategy for w ise conservation and w ise develo ment. Critical natural rocesses are analyzed systematically at the national scale, including headwater conservation, soil erosion revention, storm water managem ent and flood control, desertification com bating and biodiversity conservation. Indiv idual security atterns for safeguarding each of these natural rocesses are identified and then integrated into an overall ecological security attern. Three levels ofNationalEcologicalSecurity Pattern are defined, the lower security level, themoderate security level and the higher security level
