2004 10 2004, l 10 187 Foreign Languages and Their Teaching Seria l 187 试析庞德英译中国古诗的忠实性与等效性 魏望东 ( 中山大学中山医学院外语教研培训中心, 广东广州 510080) : 庞德翻译了不少中国古典诗歌, 最著名的是5华夏集6 他早期翻译汉古诗的文学历史背景是 维多利亚诗歌 ( post- Victorian verse) 充满着陈腐守旧的诗风, 他翻译的目的是要借助翻译手段创作出优美的为诗歌爱好者所接受的现代主 义意象派新诗, 他的翻译策略是在理解原诗的基础上而不受原诗字面意义的约束进行诗歌再创作作者试分析庞德所译 的三首汉诗, 提出我们不必去纠缠他的译作是否忠实与等效, 指出他的中国古典诗歌的翻译实践对诗歌翻译具有 一定的启 迪意义 : 庞德; 诗歌翻译; 忠实; 等效 Abstract:Ezra Pound trans ated many Chinese c assica poems into Eng ish, the most f amous being his co ection ca ed Cathay . The historica background against w hich he undertook his great task of trans ating Chinese c assica poems is the f act that the post- Victorian verse during those days was fu of sta eness and conventiona ity. His purpose for the task w as to create, by means of trans ation, new poems of imagism that cou d be great y w e comed by the poetry overs of those days. Such a purpose predetermined his trans ating methods, w hich w as to create new poems, based on his understanding of the true sense of the Chinese origina s, rather than trans ate itera y. After making an ana ysis of three poem s trans ated by him , the writer assumes that w e shou dn. t get entang ed by the dichotomy of the faithfu ness or un- faithfu ness and equiva ence or ack of equiva ence of his trans ation. In the end , the writer proposes that his practices in trans ating Chinese c assica poem s can shed some ight on the trans ation of poetry.
