Upholding Qingzhen?: Hui Ethnoreligious Revival on the Sino-Tibetan Frontier 张亦农 （上海大学社会学系） Recent scholarship on Hui ethnic and religious revival has focused on either an ethnic Hui autonomous area (i.e., Ningxia or other Hui autonomous regions), or a secluded Hui community in Han dominated regions. As conclusion, western scholarship (Gladney 1991, 1998, Gillette 2000, Jaschok 2000) argues that the Hui ethnic revival after the 1980s in China has been essentially an Islamic revival that Hui people has employed as a resistance to the contemporary Chinese state development and the Chinese discourse of modernization. Many Chinese scholars, on the other hand, argue against this conclusion by revisiting the same fieldsite (Zhou 2004) or by comparing a parallel case in another context (Wang 2005). In this paper I will present a case study of Hui community in the Sino-Tibetan borderland. Although they have been living in this Tibetan dominated region for more than 300 years, Hui community has not become the Zang-Hui (or Tibetanized Hui). Neither have they kept a strict Qingzhen style of life due the harsh economic and social/political environment. My case shows that the post-1980s Hui ethnoreligious revival in China should be reconsidered as a complex of social political process rather than a simple cultural religious one.
