Thank you! Abstract The Great Gatsby is one of the twentieth century’s brilliant works which depicts the expectation, dissatisfaction and disappointment of the young generation with the then American reality. In order to renew an old romance, the protagonist does what he can do regardless of the cost. However, from the beginning to the end, he never realizes what he is always seeking for is an illusion, a worthless one. Finally, Gatsby pays for his “ideal incarnation” the most expensive price—life, and becomes the scapegoat of Daisy. This thesis aims at the discussion of the tragedy of Gatsby in its social, historical and authorial perspectives by examining the substance of American dream, the blindness of the protagonist and the cruelty of the society epitomized by the immoral Buchanans for a combination of these elements makes inevitable Gatsby’s failure and tragedy.
