Abstract: Sand dredging is an econom ic activityw ith severe ecological effects. It stirs up sedmi ent, thereby reducingw ater clarity and underwater light clmi ate, which in turn resu lts in a series of environmental mi pacts. This study ami ed tomonitor the water clarity in Poyang Lake affected by the dredging, wh ich started in 2001. A tmi e series ofLANDSAT mi ageswere used to identify vessels and estmi ate the concurrentwater clarities, wh ileMODIS mi agesw ere used to estmi ate the dynam ic change ofw ater clarity in the six JuneOctober seasons from 2000 to 2005.
