Abstract: Coral reef bleaching, the ecological phenomenon of whiten ing of reefs, results from the loss of symbiotic
zooxanthellae and/or a reduction in photosynthetic p igment concentrations in zooxanthellae resid ingw ithin the gastroderm al
tissues of host anmi als. Bleaching can be triggered by a variety of environm ental factors including extrem es of temperature
( heat shock and cold shock), ultrav iolet radiation, pollution, d isease, etc. . A lthough any of these processesmay act on a
local scale, largescale bleach ing ( orm ass bleach ing) events have generally been linked to elevated sea surface temperature
( or h igh irradiance) as a result of recent globalw arm ing, accom panied by intensified E lN i oSouthern Oscillation(ENSO)
events. M ass bleach ing events often resu lt in largescale coralm ortality, such as the 199 w idespread bleaching event that
led tom assivem ortality of global reefs. Furtherm ore, such coral reef bleaching has increased in frequency, intensity, and
geographical extent ov
