Nature of Translation What is translation? 1. Ask students to talk about their ideas about the definition. 2. Let’s see some virtuosos’ opinion: “the most complex type of event yet produced in the evolution of the cosmos?”---I.A.Richards (1953) Translation is translating meaning. （ Nida） “译即易，谓换易言语以相解也。” (唐. 贾公彦) “翻译不是静态的代码转换，而是以关联为准绳，以顺应为手段，以意图为归宿，尽量使译文向原文趋同的动态行为”（赵彦春） II. The Purpose and Target of This Course 1. What will us study? Ask yourself these questions：what role the translation plays in shaping the society? How to orgnize a translation task? What are the requirements for the translator? How to judge a version?
