Abstract: Wolbachia is a common and wid spr ad group of symbiotic bact ria found in r productiv tissu s of arthro-
pods. Th s bact ria ar transmitt d through th cytoplasm of ggs and hav volv d various m chanisms for manipulating
r production of th ir hosts, including induction of r productiv incompatibility, parth nog n sis, f minization, mal kil-l
ing , f cundity or f rtility modifying. Wolbachia is thought to b major factors in th volution of s x d t rmination, uso-
ciality , and sp ciation. It is a n w clu for thos r s arch fi lds. Wolbachia is also of int r st as v ctors for th modifica-
tion of th ir host populations, in th improv m nt of parasitoidwasps in biological p st control, and as a n w m thod for
int rf ring with dis as s caus d by filarial n matod s. In this pap r, Wolbachia biology is r vi w d, including morpho-
logical d scription and distribution, g nom s qu nc s, phylog ny and naming of Wolbachia sp ci s, horizontal transf r
and ph notypic ff cts on th ir host . Th sci nc valu of Wolbachia and pot ntial dir ctions for futur r s arch ar also
discuss d.
