Navigating the Mindsets and Min(e)dfields
* Slide 5 Change is constant and constantly challenges us. 3 central aspects of change we need to focus on: improvement of outcomes; internal/external forces; impact of globalisation. * Slide 6Education by its very nature and role must be at the very seat of change. Too often though education follows change rather than leading or being at the cutting edge of change. Teacher education has an obligation to keep ahead of change- proactive rather than reactive. * * Slide 8 Some of the biggest barriers or impediments to change come from the complexity of human behaviours and attitudes. Failure to let go the old and embrace the new and failure to be actively and deeply reflective which is ironic in Teacher Education where reflection is considered to be a core characteristic of the effective practitioner. * Slide 9 Passion and politics can be both negative and positive influences in any change process. Passion on its own is not enough. Political ideology on its own not enough. Both are contributors to the development of mindsets and minefields i.e. the idea of….” what I believe is right. I own this knowledge because I am passionate about it and I have deep political understandings about it” * Slide 10 Academic contexts can by their very nature i.e. emphasis on research encourage people to develop epistemological paradigms….experts in narrow research disciplines. Mindsets are deeply embedded. * Slide 11 Important consideration when leading change process..can be individual mindset or collective mindset. * * Slide 12 Dispositions influence the way people view or react to change…...negative or positive orientation. Negative disposition people tend to see the problems and positive people see the opportunities. * Slide 13 Group dynamics play a crucial role in change process..important to understand the 3 aspects of inclusion , control and affection. Effective leadership requires recognising and managing these aspects. People who don’t feel included or “unloved” can behave bad
