10.1007/s12209-011-1598-0 Length-BasedVehicleClassificationin Multi-laneTrafficFlow YUYang YUMing YANGang ZHAIYandong SchoolofInformationEngineering,HebeiUniversityofTechnology,Tianjin300401,China Abstract:Fortherealtimeclassificationofmovingvehiclesinthemulti-lanetrafficvideosequences,alength-based methodisproposed.Toextractthemovingregionsofinterest,thedifferenceimagebetweentheupdatedbackground andcurrentframeisobtainedbyusingbackgroundsubtraction,andthenanedge-basedshadowremovalalgorithmis implemented.Moreover,athresholdingsegmentationmethodfortheregiondetectionofmovingvehiclebasedonlo cationsearchisdeveloped.Attheestimationstage,aregistrationlineissetupinthedetectionarea,thenthevehicle lengthisestimatedwiththehorizontalprojectiontechniqueassoonasthevehicleleavestheregistrationline.Lastly, thevehicleisclassifiedaccordingtoitslengthandtheclassificationthreshold.Theproposedmethodisdifferentfrom traditionalmethodsthatrequirecomplexcameracalibrations.Itcalculatesthepixel-basedvehiclelengthbyusingun calibratedtrafficvideosequencesatlowercomputationalcost.Furthermore,onlyoneregistrationlineissetup,which hashighflexibility.Experimentalresultsofthreetrafficvideosequencesshowthattheclassificationaccuraciesforthe largeandsmallvehiclesare97.1％ and96.7％ respectively,whichdemonstratestheeffectivenessoftheproposed method. imageprocessing;backgroundsubtraction;vehicleclassification;virtualline;horizontalprojection 2011-05-13 *SupportedbyKeyNaturalScienceFoundationofHebeiEducationDepartment(No.ZD200911)andTechnologyRDProgramofHebeiProvince (No).
