Obituary Leader in typology and European linguistics: Anna Siewierska (1955–2011) MARTIN HASPELMATH and EKKEHARD KÖNIG Anna Siewierska, President of the Association for Linguistic Typology (2007–2011) and one of the world’s leading typolo- gists, died in a road accident on 6 August 2011, at the age of 55. Originally from Gdynia, Poland, she spent many years of her early life in Australia, where her fa- ther worked in foreign trade. In ´ 1980–1981 she was in Gdansk and took an active part in the his- toric events surrounding the rise ´ ´ of Solidarnosc, working as a link between the trade union leader- ship and English-speaking jour- nalists. Her linguistics career began
