《The Piano Lesson剧本》.doc

The Piano Lesson August Wilson, who, as a young poet, wanted to be Dylan Thomas, has become in recent years a major force in the American theater. He has projected a sequence of ten plays that will chronicle the African American experience in the United States in each decade of the twentieth century.?Ma Raineys Black Bottom,?the first of these to be completed, premiered at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1984, went to Broadway shortly thereafter, and eventually won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. The plays that have so far followed are?Fences?(1985),?Joe Turners Come and Gone?(1986),?The Piano Lesson(1987),?Two Trains Running?(1989), and?Seven Guitars?(1996). Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Wilson grew up in the Hill, a black neighborhood to which his mother had come from North Carolina. His white father never lived with the family. Wilson quit school at sixteen and worked in a variety of menial jobs, meanwhile submitting poetry to a number of local publications. He didnt begin to find his writing voice, however, until he moved to Minneapolis-St. Paul, where he founded the Black Horizons Theatre Company in 1968 and later started the Playwrights Center. He supported himself during part of this time by writing skits for the Science Museum of Minnesota. The Piano Lesson --?awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1990 -- offers comedy as well as serious examination of an African American familys spiritual heritage. August Wilson (b.1945) The Piano Lesson?1990 characters Doaker Charles? Lymon Berniece,?Doakers niece? Avery Maretha,?Bernieces eleven-year-old-daughter Wining Boy Boy Willie? Grace setting:?The action of the play takes place in the kitchen and parlor of the house where Doaker Charles lives with his niece, Berniece, and her eleven year-old daughter, Maretha. The house is sparsely furnished, and although there is evidence of a womans touch, there is a lack of warmth and vigor. Berniece and Maretha occupy the upstairs rooms. Doakers room
