Britain was at war with France, which is the battle of Waterloo. （滑铁卢之战） All the people among the upper-middle society scrambled for（争夺） fame, wealth and power. Publication Vanity Fair: A Novel without a Hero is a novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, first published in 1847–48, satirizing society in early 19th-century Britain. The book‘s title comes from John Bunyan’s allegorical story The Pilgrim‘s Progress（天路历程）. Vanity fair refers to a stop along the pilgrim’s progress: a never-ending fair held in a town called Vanity, which is meant to represent man‘s sinful（有罪的） attachment to worldly（世俗的） things. Becky Sharp Becky Sharp is born in a poor family.Her father is a poor painter and her mother is a French actor of singing opera. Her parents all died when she was a child.So she was sent to Pingkerdun Women’s Boarding school.She is good at singing.After leaving the school,she begin to use many kinds of means for Vanity. Amelia Sedley Amelia Sedley is born in a rich family. Miss Pinkerton(her teacher) describes her as industrious, obedient, sweet, and beloved. All the people like her in the school. Amelia has mastered these accomplishments: music, dancing, needlework and so on. Jos Sedley Amelias older brother, Jos Sedley, who made a respectable fortune as a tax collector in India. He is the first man that Becky meets.She tris to seduce（诱惑） him to enter good society,but failed. Rawdon Crawley (Becky’s husband) Rawdon is an empty-headed cavalry officer(军官） who is his wealthy aunt‘s favorite until he marries Becky Sharp. The well-meaning Rawdon has a few talents in life. He is very good at cards and pool(撞球）. He often plays card to make money. Although Rawdon knows Becky is attractive to men
