G radua te S ch ool of th e Ch ineseA cademy of Sciences, B eij ing 100049, Ch ina ) Abstract: The concepts of sw arm in telligence are described, and its properties s ch as self-repairing, indirect comm n ication and evol tionary learn ing are mentioned. Know ledge em ergence in sw arm intelligence is analyzed then. The essence of nat ral intelligence is disc ssed. By com paring w ith com plex adaptive system, w e regard the sw arm system as a com plex adaptive system. Several m odels and expermi ents are cited for m ore explicit dem onstra- tion. The concept of system intelligence is proposed based on s mmarizing the lmi itations of sw arm in telligence. Fi- nally, som e concl sions abo t the sign ificance and trends of sw arm intelligence are given.
