ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
There are quite a few people who have traveled with me in the writing of this thesis.
First of all, I am most grateful to my supervisor, Professor Gu Peiya, who has given me a
lot of encouragement and help in my thesis writing process. It is her enlightenment and
constructive suggestions that have brought me to the field of teacher development. She
guided me all the way through my MA studies with enough patience and tolerance. She
responded to my immature questions with her academic commitment and inspiration for
my explorations. Under her constant guidance, the process of completing my MA thesis
turned out to be a challenging yet rewarding learning experience.
I extend my sincere thanks to the professor (Mary as her pseudonym in this thesis)
who shared her life stories as my research participant, allowing me to use her interview
data on which much of the discussion of this thesis is based. My sincere thanks also go to
all my teachers during my graduate studies at School of Foreign Languages, Soochow
University. In particular, I want to thank Professors Gao Yongchen, Jia Guanj ie, Jiang Jin,
Sun Yina, and Dr Wang Yu, Dr Heng Renquan, Dr Wang Haizhen for their personal and
professional inspirations in their course
