Unit 3 Text A：Energy Energy provides us with the driving force of life. It is what makes things move, light up, and give us sound. It is in everything. It makes everything happen. Energy lights our cities. Energy powers our vehicles, trains, planes and rockets. Energy warms our homes, cooks our food, plays our music and gives us pictures on television. Energy makes our bodies grow and allows our minds to think. Scientists define energy as the ability to do work. People have learned how to change energy from one form to another so that we can do work more easily and live more comfortably. Energy can be found in a number of different forms. It can be chemical energy, electrical energy, heat energy, light energy, mechanical energy, and nuclear energy. Renewable and Nonrenewable Energy We use many different energy sources to do work for us. Energy sources are classified into two groups: renewable and nonrenewable energy. Renewable energy may broadly be defined as energy that is of unlimited supply, such as solar, wind and water energy. As the term suggests, this energy is produced from sources we can obtain again and again. The energy generated by the movement of wind and water, from the heat and light of the sun and the heat in the ground, are all natural energy sources that cant be exhausted. More than 90% of the energy produced and consumed in the world today is from nonrenewable sources. Such resources as coal, oil, natural gas and wood cant be replaced as they are used or, can only be replaced very slowly by natural processes. Even though new coal and oil are being formed within the earth, it takes millions of years for that to happen. For example, coal was from the remains of plants that lived in vast soft wetlands some 350 million years ago. Petroleum was formed from the remains of tiny organisms that lived in seas and rivers millions of years ago. We can plant new trees, but they dont grow nearly as fast as we use the wood from exi
