Unit 4 Text A: Oxford University Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. As an internationally famous center for teaching and research, Oxford attracts students and scholars from all over the world. Almost a quarter of the students come from overseas. Oxford is a collegiate university, with 39 self-governing colleges, related to the University in a type of federal system. There are also seven Permanent Private Halls. 39 colleges and all Halls admit students for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. 7 other colleges are for graduates only; 1 has fellows only, and 1 specializes in part-time and continuing education. Oxford is an independent and self-governing institution, consisting of the central University and the Colleges. The vice-chancellor, who holds office for up to seven years, is the senior officer of the University. The Chancellor, who is usually a famous public figure, serves as the titular head of the University. The principal policy-making body is the Council of the University which is responsible for the academic policy and strategic direction of the University, and operates through four major committees. The Universitys five Academic Divisions are responsible for day-to-day decision-making in matters, such as finance and planning. Each year, Oxford welcomes students with recognized potential from all over the globe, at both undergraduate and graduate level. Students are attracted by the chance to study at an internationally famous seat of learning, with a centuries-old reputation for outstanding academic achievement.
