SUNTA Health Physics Division, Internal Dosimetry Section, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay 400 085, India (Recehed 25 October 1984; in revisedform 5 February 1985) Abstract--The TL sensitivity of most varieties of quartz is too poor to allow its use in dosimetry. We have sensitised a faint purple variety of Indian quartz by thermal (600-800~C)and radiation (105Gy) pre-treatments. After sensitization it can measure doses as low as 1gGy using the TL glow peak of 100°C. Because of the fast fading at room temperature this peak cannot be used for environmental gamma dosimetry but can be useful for the beta dose measurement of the pottery sherd. For this purpose the sherd-TLD pack is required to be kept in a freezer. The present paper demonstrates the applicability of 100°Cpeak of quartz in the beta dosimetry of the sherd, Storage for 1day at - 10°Cor lower is sut~cient to measure the beta dose-rate of the sample. 1.
