* In a multi-platform configuration, a queue manager runs on each of the platforms (for example, one running on a UNIX system and another on zOS). From the view of an application there is only one Queue manager. That is, queues on either platform can “appear as if it were local”. As a consequence, applications designed to work in a single Queue Manager environment continue to work, unchanged, in a multi-Queue Manager environment. This means that programming investments are preserved and growth can be non-disruptive. Of course, multi-platform deployments introduce complexities that need to be managed by the queue manager. Specifically, the integrity of “unit of work” needs to be preserved across multiple systems on a network. So, too, does security need to be extended for messages that now travel on a network. A “unit of work” is accomplished through a 2-phase commit. This is a well accepted approach for distributed environments that is commonly used by transaction monitors (for example, CICS) and database managers (for example, DB2).
