10.1111/j.1759-6831.2011.00158.x Evolutionarypatternoftheregulatorynetworkforflowerdevelopment: InsightsgainedfromacomparisonoftwoArabidopsisspecies 1,2yangLIU 1，2Chun-CeGUO 1Gui-XiaXU 1Hong-YanSHAN 1Hong-ZhiKONG 1StateKeyLaboratoryofSystematicandEvolutionaryBotany,InstituteofBotany,ChineseAcademyofSciences,Beijing100093,China 2GraduateUniversityofChineseAcademyofSciences,Beijing100049,China PreviousstudiesonArabidopsisthalianaandothermodelplantshaveindicatedthatthedevelopmentof afloweriscontrolledbyaregulatorynetworkcomposedofgenesandtheinteractionsamongthem.Studiesonthe evolutionofthisnetworkwillthereforehelpunderstandthegeneticbasisthatunderliesflowerevolution.Inthisstudy, byreviewingthemostrecentpublishedwork,weadded31genesintothepreviouslyproposedregulatorynetwork forflowerdevelopment.Thus,thenumberofgenesreached60.Wethencomparedthecomposition,structure,and evolutionaryrateofthesegenesbetweenA.thalianaandoneofitsallies,A.lyrata.Wefoundthattwogenes(FLCand MAF2)show1∶2and2∶2relationshipsbetweenthetwospecies,suggestingthattheyhaveexperiencedindependent, post-speciationduplications.Oftheremaining58genes,35(60.3％)havedivergedinexon-intronstructureand, consequently,codeforproteinswithdifferentsequencefeaturesandfunctions.Molecularevolutionaryanalyses furtherrevealedthat,althoughmostfloralgeneshaveevolvedunderstrongpurifyingselection,somehaveevolved underrelaxedorchangedconstraints,asevidencedbytheelevationofnonsynonymoussubstitutionratesand/or thepresenceofpositivelyselectedsites.Takentogether,theseresultssuggestthattheregulatorynetworkforflower developmenthasevolvedratherrapidly,withchangesinthecomposition,structure,andfunctionalconstraintof genes,aswellastheinteractionsamongthem,beingthemostimportantcontributors.
