US—ChinaForeignLanguage，ISSN 1539-8080 May2014，Vo1．12，No．5，360-369 a L l§H Ihl岱 IdeologicalFoundationsoftheIgboOralProverbsTranslationsof EmekaC．Ifesieh DeltaStateUniversity，Abraka，Nigeria ProverbsinTFA (ThingsFallApart)(1958)shouldnotonlybeseenasuniqueperformances，butalsoasspecific encapsulationsofideologicaland socioculturalaccretionsoftheIgbo peopleinNigeria．Theavalancheof proverbsinTFA andtheirrepresentationsgivethenovelanamazinglypeculiarandattractiveoutlook．Thosemay besomeofthereasonswhythebookhasaglobalcriticalacclaim andhasbeentranslatedinto36languageswith morethna 80millioncopiessoldin50lnaguages．Althoughtheproverbscallspecialattention，becausethey constitute lna dmarksin theplotdevelopmentofthenovel，theirideologicalunderpinningsare notreadily discernible．Nevertheless，agreatpreponderanceofworksdone on proverbsusually indicatetheproverbs’ functionswithincontextsofapplicationgivinglittleornoattentiontotheirideologicalfoundations．Therefore， beyondthefunctionalapplication，thiswrite-upusesthesociosemioticapproachtoCDA (CriticalDiscourse Analysis)nadBlack’SinteractionviewofmetaphortocriticallyinvestigatetheproverbsfoundinTFAwiththe intentiontoaccountfortheimagery，unravelopaquestructures，socioculturalbases，andpowerrelationsthat underpinthesustenanceoftheproverbsorotherwise．Findingsindicatethattheproverbsoriginatefrom Igbo spiritualiyt．Throughtheuseoffloral，faunal，socioeconomic，andpoliticaldiscourses，thelifeexperiencesofthe peoplearesummedupinthewisesayings． Keywords．socioculturalaccretions，CDA (CriticalDiscourseAnalysis)，powerrelations，Igbospirituality，Igbo oralproverbs
