Tai-Yih Tso On the design and implementation of learning system with dynamic multiple linked representations Abstract The purpose of this article is to elaborate upon a model of a learning system with multiple dynamic linked representations based on reflection-on-action. The intent of the model is to provide a theoretical framework for designing and implementing a learning environment using computer technologies. A process of mathematical modeling was proposed as a mathematics teaching strategy within the learning system. We will also discuss the graphs of trigonometric functions to show how this system be used in mathematical modeling instruction. I. Introduction A trend of modern mathematics instruction One of the trends of modern mathematics instruction is to integrate technologies into the learning system which encourages learners constructing their own knowledge through exploration and inquiry. This trend is reflected in recommendations of the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 1989, 1991) for the teaching and learning of mathematics. How do we construct a technology-supported learning environment for students learning mathematics in meaningful and purposeful ways? This is an important issue in mathematical education from both of theory and practice. Mathematics Learning activities in classroom may be modeled as a complex dynamic learning system. Designing and implementing a learning system is to provide an environment for students deeper understanding mathematics through constructing concepts of mathematics and developing capacities of problem solving. This system consists of three mutually interacting elements, the teacher, the students and content knowledge (Koehler Grouws, 1992). The content knowledge is presented by external representations, such as verbal description, graphs, symbol, table.
