How to Wax Your Skis Tuning your skis is an individual process. Use these suggestions to create your own process. Once created though, you should follow the same process every time. Also keeping your process simple will allow you to produce a consistent result, which is extremely important – you need to know how your skis are going to react. To properly tune your skis, each of these parts should be addressed. Why tune and wax your skis? When skis are used, the base can be damaged from striking rocks, twigs or other hard objects in the snow. The tip or binding of the other ski can also cause damage if contact is made. Even when the skis are stored, the base can become oxidized or the edges can rust. Any of these conditions will inhibit the gliding characteristics of the ski. Tuning a ski involves removing or repairing any of these conditions and setting up the ski to maximize its gliding abilities. The finished, tuned, ski will have clean, flat bases that are waxed and polished to suit the conditions of the day, and have rust-free, beveled edges.
