69 APPENDIX A LITERATURE REVIEW In the liter ature r eview given in this appendix , problems due to the interaction b etw een the vehicle a nd the t rack, various approaches to vehicle/track syste m modelling, and r esear ch with r esp ect to track settlem ent is presented. A.I PROBLEMS DUE TO VEHICLE/TRACK INTERACTION Most of the r ecent re sear ch on the dynamic beh aviour of r a il vehicles and th e track ha s b een stimul ate d by the n eed to under stand th e cau se of practical problems arising from the inter action between the vehicle and the track and to develop solut ion s or treatm ents for those problem s . Prob lem s of vehicle/track interaction can be group e d into variou s areas of concern and ar e listed in T able Al (Knothe and Grassie , 1993). The frequ ency r a n ge of p articul ar interest for the different problems is also given. Areas of primary concern to the present investigation are vehicle dynamics, bo gies a nd unsprung ma ss, track ballast a nd t r ack geometry. These issues are r eviewed below. Vehicle dynamics. The dynamic interaction b etween the vehicle a nd the tr ack can cau se problems with r espect to the ride quality a nd th e stru ctura l fatigue of the rail vehicle. In general, liter ature on the dynam ic behaviour of r a il vehicles is concerned with determining and evaluatin g ride quality (O RE Q C 1l6 (Repor t 8), 1977; P ar son s a nd Whitham, 1979) .
