* * * * * * * Another focus beyond the classroom is the students’ career development. We don’t want students to just live in their books. As they live with us for 4 years, we want them to get experience on campus so that they will be desirable to employers when they graduate. This chart is a nice reminder academic study is just ONE part of learning. A student also needs Practical Experience and Community Involvement Perhaps you might want to get involved in your community AND make it a part of your academic study – --an example might be a biology major who wants to be involved in their community might participate in a program to protect the wet lands of the area --or a theater major might want to be involved with their community, and so they work at the local theater or for the local theater festival to learn about marketing or set design. The point is -- As you learn in the classroom, student affairs should be available to help you make your book learning practical * HOWEVER, There is a problem with this model Students are NOT just brains They come with bodies They come with families They come with problems They come with strengths They come with weaknesses Students come in different shapes and sizes They have different ways of learning And there are subjects beyond calculus and English, that will help you later in life. When you graduate from high school, you graduate at this emotional and developmental level When you become a worker, you need to have this level of emotional maturity and sophistication. How do you get from here – to there? Student Affairs was therefore developed to think about the student as a whole being The student is not just a brain The student is a body, a talented person who might need more than just calculus to be a functioning person in society. * So, now, we like to think about students this way. We like to think of college as not just classes College in fact should encompass life and learning both in
