A Social-linguistic Analysis on the Excerpts of The Thorn Birds 　　Abstract： The TV miniseries of The Thorn Birds reveals abundant language uses which are closely related to many aspects of sociolinguistic areas. The selected excerpts from the transcripts are noteworthy because they are an interesting demonstration of some sociolinguistic terms， which are particularly relevant to the issues explored in the sociolinguistic classes. Context 　　The story is based on the 1977 novel by Colleen McCollough. An ambitious priest， Ralph， finds his destiny fatally entwined with a family living on an Australian outback sheep station called Drogheda. The love between Ralph and Meggie （the only daughter of the Cleary family） is the forbidden desire that builds over the span of many years. Ralph wants to be a perfect priest but Meggie is resentful of the God because she longs to possess the man she loves. The conflicts are tangled with ambition， faith， human love and inevitable fate. A turning point comes dramatically when Mary Carson， Meggie’s wealthy aunt， devises a plan to separate Ralph from Meggie by tempting him with his heart’s desire： a high place in the Church hierarchy. Although her official will leaves the bulk of her estate to Paddy （Meggie’s father）， she secretly writes a new one， making the Roman Catholic Church the main beneficiary and Ralph the executor. The bequest of thirteen million pounds has its desired effect， and Ralph soon leaves Drogheda to begin his rapid advance in the Church.
