The Urgent Need to Encourage Aspiring Engineers: Effects of College Degree Program Culture on Female and Minority Student STEM Participation Ashley E. Nixon, Heather Meikle, Kathryn Borman Abstract - As experts in technology continue to rapidly advance knowledge and technical capabilities in their field, the United States is faced with an increasing need to enhance student interest and retention in technology fields, particularly engineering programs. The first purpose of this paper is to describe the current state of retention in the STEM education and work force, with particular focus on Hispanic and female students. The second purpose of this paper is to establish the need for research that can provide insight as to how to both engage and retain engineering students. A comprehensive description of our research plan and potential implications of this on-going study will be discussed.
