Council of Australian University Librarians Executive Meeting 1/97 held at the Menzies Library, ANU Tuesday 4 February 1997, from 9.30am. Minutes Attendance. Alex Byrne, Eve Woodberry, Gaynor Austen, Ray Choate Apology: Helen Hayes In attendance: Diane Costello Minutes of the previous meeting, 14 November 1996. There were no amendments to the minutes. Business arising from the previous meeting, not otherwise listed on the agenda. It was agreed that if the National Preservation Office requested a CAUL representative to replace Neil Radford, Karl Schmude, who already represents ACLIS, be invited to represent CAUL as well. Jan Lyall has reported that the ongoing composition of the advisory group is not clear, but that Karl Schmude remains a member. Review of Higher Education Financing and Policy (West Review). The timetable reported in Campus Review is: January. Advertisements inviting short submissions from all interested bodies and individuals (very short, only four pages each, although appendices will be permitted) February 11. First meeting March. Consider the “role of universities” April. The panel will visit all the institutions - 72 campuses May. West will travel, possibly South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Scandinavia, the UK and US June-August. Committee will deal intensively with submissions, engaging in constant dialogue with stakeholders, before producing a “discussion paper” before its final report. It was agreed that the SCONUL response to the UK’s Dearing Inquiry was useful, but that the list of questions to which they were responding would clarify some of the answers. (Action: DC) In discussing the CAUL submission to the West inquiry, the following points were raised: important to reflect on the diminishing capital of the universities; all sectors (public school libraries, national state libraries) are run down, and depend more on the universities for their information resources; Neil Radford’s work on the declining purchasing power
