Clinical study on patients blood serum brain-gut peptides with herbs-isolated umbillical moxibustion in treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome of Spleen Qi-deficiency Type Speciality: Acupuncture and Moxibustion Author: Chen Qian Tutor: Gao Shuzhong Abstract Objective: Herbs-isolated umbilical moxibustion therapy and starch-isolated umbilical moxibustion therapy were selected to observe the efficacy on Substance P （SP）、 5-hydroxytryptamine （5-HT ）and Vasoactive intestinal peptide （VIP ）in blood serum of patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome （IBS ）of spleen Qi-deficiency type. The aim of this research is to compair the influence to these brain-gut peptides, explain the pathogenesis of umbilical moxibustion in angle of brain-gut peptides and provide laboratory evidence for curative effect. Methods: 45 patients with IBS of spleen deficiency type were selected, 23 in herbs-isolated group, and 22 in the other. ELISA method was adopted to detect SP、5-HT and VIP in patients blood serum before or after treatment, and differences were compared. Results: After treatment, the differences of VIP were highly significant in both groups(P0.01). The differences of 5-HT and SP were highly significant in herbs-isolated group(P0.01), while significant in starch-isolated group(P0.05). There were no significant differences of SP、5-HT、VIP between the two groups neither before or after threatment(P0.05), but there was better downward trend in herbs-isolated group. Conclusion: Herbs-isolated umbilical moxibustion therapy and starch-isolated umbilical moxibustion therapy can both reduce the serum content of SP 、5-HT and VIP significantly of patients with IBS of spleen Qi-deficiency type.
