We have seen that one of the main input devices for the FMGC’s is the FCU. Good CRM requires you to verify all inputs with the appropriate output. In almost all cases when you make an input on the FCU, you will check your action on the PFD [make PFD appear] and most often you will verify on the Flight Mode Annciator (FMA). [Kill arrow- kill Green screen text kill white screen text - column 2 HDG - column 3 ALT] The fist line shows the engaged modes for the flight guidance system: In our example the SPEED mode is engaged for the Autothrust - This means that the autothrust will manage the power to give the desired or target speed the Altitude (ALT) mode is engaged for the vertical mode - This means the Autopilot/FD’s will provide guidance to maintain altitude. the Heading (HDG) mode is engaged for the lateralmode - This means the Autopilot/FD’s will provide guidance to maintain heading.
