If we take a look at tuned tooling, which is one step up, there’s a damper package in there, but what’s unique about this particular package is that there’s an adjustment screw. And that damper package is actually supported on two O-rings there. Actually, what happens is by moving that adjustment screw in and out I can actually change the frequency of that bar. As I change the frequency of that bar, I can bring it into a stable mode, or a stable position when trying to machine parts. These will normally run anywhere from six to one up to ten to one length to diameter ratio. And they’re relatively inexpensive, and they do a fairly decent job. Tuneable Boring Bars should be considered at L to D ratios beginning at 6 to 1. ******************************************************** So where does tuned tooling fit into this particular package? Well, if I’m going to be boring at a 4 to 1 length to diameter ratio, we’re looking at a steel bar. If I’m looking from 4 to 1 to 6 to 1 and we start looking at price considerations, we may want to look at heavy metal or carbide. Anywhere from six to one to ten to 1, I would start looking at a tunable bar. As I mentioned, they are standard, they’re in the catalog, they’re available off the shelf. Anything over a ten to one you’re looking at a special composite bar or a special tunable bar. If we start looking at cost, you’re going to find that the tunable bar is probably a much more reasonable cost than the special composite bar. So those would be your considerations when you start looking at boring applications, over and above what normal considerations would be for boring applications.
